Tremor therapy · Tension and trauma release

Tremor Therapy: Let the Body Do the Talking.

A short set of gentle exercises brings tension into the muscles, then you lie down and let your body do what every mammal knows how to do: shake it off. Nothing is forced, and you are in control the whole time.

What tremor therapy is

Shaking Is the Body's Oldest Way of Letting Go.

Watch a dog after a fright or a deer after a chase and you will see it: a shake that runs through the whole body and then stops, as if nothing had happened. That tremor is how mammals discharge the stress of a threat. Humans experience neurogenic tremoring too. Most of us have just learnt to hold it in.

Tremor therapy gives the body permission to do it again, on purpose and in safety. A short series of simple, gentle exercises tires the muscles of the lower body. Then you lie down on the mat, and the tremor arrives on its own: sometimes a flutter in the legs, sometimes a wave that moves up through the hips and the back.

The tremor works on the deep muscles that hold stress and tension, including the ones you cannot reach by stretching. People come for tight hips and backs, for the wired feeling that never quite switches off, and for things that happened a long time ago that the body has not forgotten.

Try the idea

Press and Hold. Then Let Go.

This is the shape of a session in miniature. Hold the button and the tension builds, the way the exercises tire the legs. Let go and watch the tremor run through and settle, the way the body does on the mat.

Hold the button to build tension.

Or press the space bar and hold it.

What a session looks like

Half an Hour of Exercises, Then the Body Takes Over.

A one to one session lasts seventy minutes. I take you through the exercises slowly, you lie down, and I stay with you while the tremor does its work. You can slow it down or stop it at any point; nothing is pushed and nothing is rushed. Afterwards there is time to rest under a blanket and let it settle.

Tremor therapy is suitable from age seven and over. It can be a lovely option for families and is one of the few things parents and children can do together. No need to talk, just being present and in the body, moving at your own pace.

If you have looked into trauma release exercises before, this is that family of work, and I have done it myself for years.

Who comes to tremor therapy

Stress, Tension, and the Things the Body Remembers.

People come with anxiety that lives in the body: the clenched jaw, the tight shoulders, the stomach that never settles. They come after a hard year, a bereavement or a shock. Athletes and gym goers come because their bodies are strong and stiff at the same time. Some come because talking therapy helped their head but never reached the rest of them.

You do not have to tell me what happened. You do not have to relive anything. The tremor does not need a story; it only needs a little space and a little time.

Questions people ask

Questions AboutTremor Therapy.

Straight answers, in my own words. If yours is not here, message me and I will answer it myself.

What is tremor therapy?

Tremor therapy is a simple series of exercises that helps your body release deep muscular tension and stress through natural shaking or trembling, known as neurogenic tremors. We move through the exercises together, then you lie down and let the tremor do its work.

How does tremor therapy work?

The exercises gently tire the muscles of the legs and hips, which helps switch on your body's natural tremor response. This mild, involuntary shaking is thought to help calm the nervous system and release tension held in the body. Research is still growing, but many people notice a real difference in how they feel.

Is tremoring safe, and is it the same as a seizure?

For most people it is safe, and it is nothing like a seizure. Neurogenic tremors are gentle and rhythmic. You stay aware and in control throughout, and you can stop the shaking at any time simply by changing position, which I will show you in your session. It is not suitable for everyone, so I always check your health history first.

What does a tremor therapy session feel like?

You do a short set of gentle exercises, then lie down and let your body tremble if it wants to. It may feel like a pleasant vibration, a light shake, or occasionally nothing at all at first. Many people feel warm, relaxed and deeply calm afterwards.

Does the shaking hurt?

No. It usually feels like a gentle hum or flutter, sometimes bigger, and most people find it strange for a minute and then surprisingly pleasant. If it ever feels like too much, you straighten your legs and it settles.

What is tremor therapy good for?

People use tremoring for stress, chronic tension, feeling wired or exhausted, and difficult experiences that are still held in the body. It can also help people who carry tension in the hips, back, neck and shoulders. It is not a treatment for any condition, but it can be a powerful support.

Can body tremoring help release stuck trauma?

Tremor therapy was developed to help the body release the effects of stress and trauma without needing to talk about the past or relive it, and many people find it helpful for this reason. It is not a replacement for trauma therapy, and I work with you sensitively and at your own pace. There is more on the trauma therapy page.

Can tremoring help with back pain, neck pain and tight hips?

Many people find it releases tension in the muscles around the hips, back and neck, and notice their body feels looser and lighter afterwards. If you have persistent or severe pain, please see your doctor as well.

Do I have to talk about what happened to me?

No. Tremor therapy works with the body, not the story. You never need to share anything you do not want to.

Why do animals shake, and what does that have to do with tremor therapy?

In the wild, animals often tremble after a stressful event, then carry on as if nothing happened. Tremor therapy is based on the idea that people have the same built in mechanism but often override it. The exercises help wake up the neurogenic tremor response, which all mammals share. I wrote more about it in why the body shakes.

Can I do tremoring at home by myself?

Yes, and that is one of the best things about it. Once I have taught you how to tremor safely, you can practise at home whenever you need to, so it is a tool you keep for life.

How many tremor therapy sessions do I need before I can do it on my own?

Most people learn the exercises in one to a few sessions. I will make sure you feel confident before you practise alone. A one to one session is seventy minutes at the studio in Olney and costs £60.

Is tremor therapy suitable for everyone?

Not always. It is not recommended, or needs adapting, if you are pregnant, recovering from recent surgery or injury, or have certain conditions such as seizure disorders or severe mental health conditions. Tell me about your health history when you book and I will advise you.

What is the difference between tremor therapy and trauma therapy?

Trauma therapy, such as trauma focused CBT or EMDR, is delivered by qualified mental health professionals and is one of the recommended treatments for PTSD. Tremor therapy is different. It is a body based self regulation method that uses simple exercises to bring on natural shaking, aiming to release tension and support the nervous system. It is not a treatment for PTSD, and research is still early. Some people use both, and they can complement each other well. If you are in therapy, it is always worth telling your therapist.

Can tremor therapy help with stress, burnout or feeling constantly on edge?

Many people find it helps them feel calmer, sleep better and recover from stress more easily. It can be a helpful tool if your body feels permanently switched on, or if there are holding patterns in your body that just will not shift.
